Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine focuses on restoring balance and harmony between the body’s opposing forces, yin and yang. This approach incorporates acupuncture, diet, herbal remedies, meditation, physical exercise, and massage.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been trusted for over 2,000 years to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness. It is centred on balancing the opposing energy forces yin and yang, similar to winter and summer. A balance in the yin and yang forces is required for good health. Out of balance, however, yin and yang may negatively affect your health.

Practitioners believe in qi, the life force flowing through the body in lines called meridians. When qi is balanced and moves freely, health is maintained. TCM treatments aim to restore this balance, promoting natural healing.

Electrical Acupuncture

Electroacupuncture enhances therapeutic benefits for certain conditions by using gentle electrical pulses to stimulate targeted acupressure points. Fine needles are placed in precise locations, each connected to a small electrode that activates subtle vibrations. This method engages the nervous system to help reduce inflammation, manage chronic pain, and alleviate stress, making it an effective option for various conditions.

Tuina (Therapeutic Massage)

Tuina is a hands-on external therapy in Chinese medicine that uses specialized manual techniques to stimulate acupoints and body regions, promoting healing and balance. It helps improve circulation, reduce pain and stiffness, support joint health, and regulate the body’s energy flow.

Conditions Treated:

  • Musculoskeletal: Stiff neck, frozen shoulder, low back pain, tennis elbow, joint pain
  • Internal: Stroke sequela, Insomnia, digestive issues, common cold, COPD
  • Gynaecological: Irregular or painful periods, menopause symptoms
  • Neurological: Headaches, migraines, vertigo

Tuina offers a natural approach to pain relief and overall well-being.

Cupping

Cupping uses suction cups to gently lift the skin and connective tissues, promoting circulation and relaxation. Cups can be placed statically or moved with oil for a massage-like effect. Temporary circular marks may appear due to increased blood flow, aiding healing.

Benefits:

  • Boosts circulation for healing and tissue repair
  • Relieves muscle tension and myofascial adhesions
  • Promotes relaxation and reduces stress

Avoid bathing or showering for 4–6 hours after treatment.

TCM Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a fundamental component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, designed to stimulate specific points along the “channels and collaterals” that run throughout the body. These points are thoughtfully selected by your practitioner following a thorough assessment, targeting meridians that support the restoration of balance and harmony.

The treatment involves the gentle insertion of ultra-thin, single-use needles into precise points on the body. This process helps rebalance the flow of Qi (vital energy), promoting overall well-being and supporting your body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Guasha

Guasha is a TCM technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to stroke the skin, promoting circulation and relieving muscle tension. It helps ease pain, improve mobility, and is often combined with cupping, acupuncture, or Tuina massage.

Is Guasha Safe?

Yes, when used appropriately. Mild redness is normal and fades as healing occurs. Avoid bathing or strenuous activity for 4–6 hours post-treatment.

Herb, Diet, and Lifestyle Advice

Chinese herbs, diet, and lifestyle adjustments play a key role in healing, especially for digestive and gynaecological issues. Your practitioner may recommend a tailored herbal formula to support recovery.

Herbs can be powerful, so always follow guidance and consult your doctor before adjusting medications.
TCM also considers food’s heating or cooling properties to aid healing, making dietary changes an essential part of treatment
